I had determined that it was cheaper and more convenient to pick up the rental car from the airport instead of the city. The city is connected to the airport by train, a couple of stops along the main line. At the station I saw this ancient exhibit.
Fortunately a modern train served the line. The rental formalities concluded, I drove north towards Alghero, at the north-west corner.
For lunch I made a stop just outside Oristano, found a trattoria and had the spaghetti alla vongole e bottarga. The last is salted fish (often grey mullet) roe pouch and a grated onto the pasta. It's very umami and typically Sardinian.
